Day 2 of our cross country adventure takes us back to the car where we will drive another 8 hours to see Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse.
Last Night we got to our hotel around 9 O’clock, went down to Wendy’s for some dinner, and back to the hotel room to watch some Myth Busters and settle down for the night.
We didn’t really turn the lights out until 11 and you can bet we didn’t fall asleep right away. We got up this morning at 5:00 to get a head start on our driving, although, we didn’t leave the hotel until 7.
We had breakfast and piled into the car. Mom led a prayer and read a passage to us as we continued our journey down the road.
Mom and Alise are sleeping (something I might do), the boys are watching a movie and playing with PSPs and DS’, dad is driving-of course.
The car ride was a long one and we were thankful when we finally arrived at our hotel. We all helped unload our things into the hotel room, rested for a bit and then jumped back into the car to drive to the Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore.
Crazy Horse was massive! Every member of the family enjoyed seeing the gigantic monument. Its head is all that is completed as of this point and stands 87 ½ feet tall. Evan even decided to attempt carving his own things into rocks and now is sketching out his “next big thing”.
Mount Rushmore was sensational as well. The history behind the presidents picked for that monument was incredible. Washington was chosen because he was the father of our country, Jefferson because he expressed our beliefs in the Declaration of Independence and expanded our territory with the Louisiana Purchase. Lincoln was chosen for preserving our Union and last, Roosevelt because he fulfilled the expansionist’s dream by linking the oceans with the Panama Canal. Compared to Crazy Horse, all of the president’s heads would fill up JUST Crazy Horse’s head. The detail on their faces was great. We stayed for a small showing in the evening of an explanation of the monument and how Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln shaped our country. We owe these men great thanks. (:
When we finished at the monument we drove back into town and piled back into the hotel room and again… didn’t fall asleep to about midnight and woke up a little later this morning. 6:30 am was the wake up time. We packed our things once again, had breakfast in the hotel, and headed out.
Now we have 10 more hours of driving before we reach our desired destination in Minneapolis.
