Colonial Williamsburg was a journey into the past. The authentic town of the 1700's showed us what life was like in the Colonial times. There were horse-drawn carriages and people in costume and cannons going off and a group marching. A small band marched down the streets while we were there. We tried some chocolate made from an original colonial recipe. We tried Ginger Ale and Root Beer in glass bottles... Evan mistakenly tried to buy beer.. confused by the look.
We headed into Chesapeake Bay, Virginia where we stayed just for the night.
After Chesapeake we took a scenic drive along the many sandy beaches in North Carolina and stopped at a family owned fruit stand for some peaches and homemade strawberry bread along with some boiled peanuts (a popular southern snack, however, not a hit with our family). We continued our drive and found some frozen custard at a small beach side restaurant. Then we all changed into our swim suites and headed off to a beach for some boogie boarding and fun in the Ocean at Nags Head in the Outer Banks. Mom spent her time collecting sea glass and shells, the boys played in the water and sand, Alise and I boogie boarded a bit and then spent the rest of out time laying on our towels in the sun where we happened to get a nasty burn. OW!
That night was spent in North Myrtle Beach. We got ready that next morning and drove through the large resort town of Myrtle Beach on our way to a slave plantation called Dreghton Hall, built in 1738 just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. We were able to tour the house of the master and learn about the family.
We drove and got to our hotel in Bluffton, South Carolina and hung out for the rest of the evening. Then we slept in the next day until about noon (which I believe is what summer is all about) and headed out to have some pizza for lunch.
Mom and dad took a nap back at the hotel while the kids went down to the pool and cooled off.
We came back, showered up, and put on some warm clothes and again... just relaxed. It felt REALLY good to just have a day off.
This morning we got out of bed and cleaned up, got ready and drove to see a lighthouse in Hilton Head Island as a tribute to my mom's grandma and our great grandmother who passed away. Lighthouses were what she loved most, next to her family and God.
We are currently driving into Florida for the next 7 days to hang in Disney World and other parks in the area.
Hello Magic Kingdom(:
